Say NO to NEGLECT.

Blog post image

The late Jim Rohn has been called “America’s Foremost Business Philosopher”. Of course, this blog is not about “business” or “philosophy” per se. But Mr. Rohn’s teachings and perspectives have undoubtedly influenced the thinking and achievements of mass numbers of people. We would absolutely recommend anybody interested in self-improvement and personal growth soak up as many of his teachings as possible.

A particular Jim Rohn lesson from one of his newsletters was entitled “Success is Easy. But so is Neglect”. Like so many of his teachings, it strikes right to the heart of the matter when it comes to success (or the lack thereof). And although he may be relating to “success” in business, finances, etc. what Mr. Rohn says applies in any area of life … including WEIGHT LOSS, in our opinion.

He speaks about the various things he did in business which he found easy to do … while others found those exact same things easy to NOT do. Those included basic and accepted principles of success like setting goals, reading books and attending seminars to learn and grow. Meanwhile, he noticed as he did those things others were busy blaming outside circumstances like the economy, the government, their company, etc. In other words, he found solutions while they found excuses.

Mr. Rohn wrote about the fact that everything people needed to succeed in business was available and within everyone’s reach … but most people neglected all of those resources like mentors, books and strategies. We all know that most people WANT to be successful, but most are not willing to do the WORK to achieve it.

We see this same phenomenon as people desire to succeed in weight loss. To quote Mr. Rohn …

… the primary reason most people are not doing as well as they could and should, can be summed up in a single word: neglect”.

In weight loss it really IS doing those things that seem too easy or too small to really make a difference. The cumulative effect of DECIDING to do such things over an over with DISCIPLINE and trusting the process are what enable our clients to achieve success in weight loss. On the flip side, neglecting to do the same simple things can – and likely will create an avalanche of undesired and unhealthy results. It really is a matter of momentum – be it for the positive OR for the negative. When it comes to the power of neglect, Mr. Rohn stated …

“Neglect is like an infection. Left unchecked it will spread throughout our entire system of disciplines and eventually lead to a complete breakdown of a potentially joy-filled and prosperous human life.”

Whoa! That phrase really indicates the potential BIGNESS of neglecting to stick to the basics. The word INFECTION grabs our attention. Nobody wants an infection. Certainly not one that spreads to our entire system! We all know that when an infection happens we have to immediately address it, contain it and get it cleared. Once we are aware it is there, we cannot ignore it. If we do, it will likely worsen, spread and possibly take our life! Infection is serious stuff!

Yet, let’s take this thought process even one step further. Read and ponder this one last statement Mr. Rohn made in that newsletter article. When you read it, consider it in the context of your weight loss journey. Here it is …

“Not doing the things we know we should do causes us to feel guilty and guilt leads to an erosion of self-confidence. As our self-confidence diminishes, so does the level of our activity. And as our activity diminishes, our results inevitably decline. And as our results suffer, our attitude begins to weaken. And as our attitude begins the slow shift from positive to negative, our self-confidence diminishes even more... and on and on it goes.”

Again, WOW! Think about the POWER of your seemingly small and potentially easy decisions and actions when it comes to things like your health and your weight loss journey. As outlined in that last comment, neglect really does begin to spill over into our attitudes, self-confidence and ultimately our LIFE.

Remember, as the title of that Jim Rohn article stated: “Success is easy. But so is neglect”. Choose YOUR easy today. But don’t choose neglect.
